In-folio, mm. 300×200; Splendida legatura in marocchino rosso firmata da ALIX, doppia cornice con triplice filettatura in oro sui piatti, fleurons agli angoli della cornice interna, tit. al centro del piatto ant., fregi e tit. ai piccoli ferri sul dorso, dentelle, riguardi marmorizz., tagli in oro, entro custodia in carton. marmorizz.; cc. 164, così composto: 6 cc. nn. (incl. Front.), cc.1- 157, 1 c. nn. Rara e magnifica edizione francese del più importante e significativo libro figurato del Rinascimento, il primo dedicato interamente al giardino, che diventa allegoria di un viaggio iniziatico. L’opera, tradotta da Jean Martin, s’ispira strettamente all’edizione italiana di Aldo Manuzio: essa eserciterà una notevole influenza sull’estetica dell’epoca, sia nell’ambito del libro sia per quanto riguarda le arti decorative. Le elegantissime illustrazioni, attribuite a Jean Goujon, sono direttamente influenzate dalla Scuola di Fontainebleau e, come osserva il Cicognara “sono assai bene intagliate massimamente quelle ove trovansi paesaggi ed animali”. La traduzione è libera, tuttavia è mantenuto lo spirito che ispirava l’opera in italiano e anche qui le grandi iniziali su fondo arabescato, incise appositamente per quest’opera, formano il celebre acrostico che permette di attribuire a Francesco Colonna quest’opera anonima: “Poliam frater Franciscus Columna peramavit”. Rare and magnificent French edition of the most important and significant illustrated book of the Renaissance, the first entirely dedicated to the garden, which becomes an allegory of an initiatory journey. The work, translated by Jean Martin, is closely inspired by the Italian edition of Aldus Manutius: it will exert a significant influence on the aesthetics of the time, both in the context of the book and in the decorative arts. The very elegant illustrations, attributed to Jean Goujon, are directly influenced by the School of Fontainebleau and, as Cicognara observes, “especially those where landscapes and animals are found are very well carved. The translation is free, however the spirit that inspired the work in Italian is maintained and here too the large initials on an arabesque background, engraved specifically for this work, form the famous acrostic that allows us to attribute this anonymous work to Francesco Colonna: “Poliam frater Franciscus Columna peramavit”.
